In a self-enrolment loyalty program, the customer is in control of the join step. They scan a QR at the table before ordering, or on the receipt after paying, or later at home by photographing the receipt into an OCR flow. In every path, staff never have to interrupt service or remember anything — enrolment scales with foot traffic instead of stalling under it.
The three methods trade off differently: table QR captures guests before they leave (highest intent, lowest friction) but requires table-side signage; receipt QR captures the moment of payment (easy to add, works with existing printers) but competes with the guest's urge to leave; OCR receipt scanning works even for takeaway and delivery (widest reach) but relies on the guest remembering to scan later. Most venues run at least two of the three.
Self-enrolment is what closes the loyalty death spiral. By decoupling enrolment from cashier attention, the top of the funnel stops depending on staff mood or queue length. Member growth becomes proportional to foot traffic — which is what most operators assumed a loyalty program would do in the first place.
Câu hỏi thường gặp
What is self-enrolment loyalty?
It's a loyalty program where guests join and earn points themselves — via a table QR, a receipt QR, or scanning their receipt with OCR — without needing the cashier to ask for a phone number.
Which self-enrolment method should I start with?
For dine-in, table QR is highest intent. For quick-service or takeaway-heavy venues, receipt QR + OCR receipt scanning is a stronger pair. Most venues eventually run all three because they cover different guest moments.
Do I need to replace my POS to add self-enrolment?
No. Self-enrolment runs as a loyalty layer on top of most POS systems. OCR receipt scanning specifically requires no POS integration at all — the guest photographs the printed receipt.

Payer-only ceiling
The payer-only ceiling is the structural limit on loyalty growth that arises when enrolment happens through the receipt or the payment transaction: because a party of any size produces one payer and one receipt, the programme can capture at most one member per visit.
Thuật ngữ
Cashier bottleneck
The cashier bottleneck is the failure mode where a loyalty program only enrols new members when the cashier remembers to ask for the customer's phone number — so member growth stalls as soon as the venue gets busy or staff give up asking.

Counter-bound loyalty
Counter-bound loyalty is any programme in which the four jobs that keep it alive — joining, earning points, redeeming rewards, and following up with the customer — can only be done at the counter, in front of a member of staff, at the moment of payment.
